A member of the Androscoggin County Chamber of Commerce since 1961, Bates College was founded in 1855 by abolitionists and is still recognized for its inclusive social character. Bates is considered one of the nation’s finest colleges of the liberal arts and sciences, with graduates who historically have linked education with service, leadership, and civic engagement. The Bates curriculum challenges students to develop powers of critical assessment, analysis, expression, aesthetic sensibility, and independent thought. Bates is also one of a small number of colleges requiring a senior thesis, an opportunity for extended, closely guided research and writing, performance, or studio work.
