The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra “Two Great 5ths”
The Midcoast Symphony Orchestra Concert Series III “Two Great 5ths” As a part of our 30th Anniversary Season the Midcoast Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of guest conductor Jinwook Park, presents Two Great, but very different, 5th symphonies. The first by Franz Schubert is light, lyrical and reminiscent of Mozart. The second by Gustav Mahler is a truly major work beginning with a trumpet call and a funeral march and ending with the composer’s famous and beautiful musical love letter to his bride followed by a spectacular and joyful finale. This concert will be performed in the beautiful Gendron Franco Center, 46 Cedar St., in Lewiston, Saturday, March 14, at 7:00PM. Jinwook Park serves as the Music Director of the Colby Symphony Orchestra and the Kennebec Valley Youth Symphony Orchestra, providing music and music education to the Central Maine community. He is the founder and the music director of Haffner Sinfonietta of Boston, and the former music director of Philharmonia Boston. In addition, he is the founder and music director of the Nine Valley Music Festival, a summer festival in Korea. As part of its More with Midcoast enrichment program, MSO will offer our Lewiston audience members a performance by the Youth Orchestra of Lewiston-Auburn during intermission. As one of our 30th Anniversary Season events MSO is hosting a fundraising raffle for an original piece of art by Jon Luoma, an Alna-based artist who also plays viola in the MSO. This paper collage, “Grand Canyon,” was created for an orchestra poster in January 2015, when the program included "Grand Canyon Suite" by Ferde Grofé.
