Populism & Nationalism in Europe
The Camden Conference and the Auburn Public Library invite you to a presentation by Francesco Duina, Professor of Sociology and European Studies at Bates College. He has held appointments at Harvard University, Copenhagen Business School, and the University of British Columbia (where he was Professor and Head of Sociology from 2013-2015). He is the author of nearly 30 articles in leading academic journals, op-ed pieces in newspapers such as the LA Times and The Guardian, and six books. The most recent is Broke and Patriotic: Why Poor Americans Love Their Country (Stanford University Press, 2018). Right-wing populist parties have scored major victories in Europe. What can explain their success? This talk will explore a rarely discussed factor: their surprising ability to weave right-wing ideologies with left-wing or progressive positions. These positions include support for gays, gender equality, and generous welfare policies. Why and how do these parties do this? We will consider the cases of the Party for Freedom in the Netherlands, the National Rally in France, and the Sweden Democrats. In the conclusion, we will reflect on whether any of these observations apply to Donald Trump. This program will be offered as a hybrid program (in person or virtually, via Zoom). For our planning purposes, registration is required. To register, visit the events page at www.auburnpubliclibrary.org or email dwallace@auburnpubliclibrary.org. When registering, please let us know whether you plan to attend in person or would like the Zoom link emailed to you on February 9. The Camden Conference was founded in 1987 as a nonprofit, non-partisan educational organization whose mission is to foster informed discourse on world issues. The 2022 conference “Europe: Challenged at Home and Abroad” will take place February 25-27, 2022, and will entirely virtual, live-streamed from Camden, Maine.
