LA Arts Hosts the Bates Gamelan
LA Arts is pleased to present a concert by the Bates Gamelan at 7:30pm, Saturday, April 13, 2024, in the LA Arts gallery.
The performance is free and open to the public. Gamelan is the traditional instrumental ensemble of Indonesia, consisting of gongs, sets of tuned metal keys or pots played with mallets, xylophones, drums, and other instruments, all stunningly beautiful to look at and together producing a shimmeringly hypnotic sonority.
The Bates collection used in this concert is from Sunda (the Western part of the Indonesian island of Java). The program features contemporary compositions by two guest artists: the Sundanese composer Burhan Sukarma, who will also be performing on the suling, or bamboo flute, and American composer Brian Shankar Adler, who will also perform on tabla, the North Indian drum. The musicians will also be joined by cellist Nathaniel Taylor. The Bates Gamelan is a student and community group directed by Professor of Music, Gina Fatone.
