HR Thursdays ~ Succession Planning & Mentorship
Demographically, Northern New England has the oldest (by median age) workforce in the country; Maine and New Hampshire are tied for first (or is it last?) in highest median worker age. Additionally, we have been in the midst of the largest voluntary termination crisis ("The Great Resignation") in any of our memories. As we continue to recover from the once-in-a-century pandemic, employers everywhere, but particularly in Northern New England, are continuing to reassess their workforce strategies to stay ahead of these daunting curves. Two of the best and most proactive strategies are Succession Planning and Mentorship. When it comes to Succession Planning, the key is ongoing and active planning. Too often, leadership teams prepare a succession plan and file it away, never to be seen again. In this tools-focused session, we will not only look at the elements of a great succession planning process, but we will also discuss how to keep the succession planning alive as a critical on-going part of running a business. Participants will be provided tools to bring back to their organizations to either start or augment a robust Succession Planning process. The other "master" move is to be more intentional about Mentorship within the workplace. Each of us has benefited from a mentor, either informally or formally at some point in our lives. Multiples studies have confirmed that organizations with active mentorship programs have higher rates of employee engagement and retention.
Gallup has narrowed down the keys to employee engagement and retention to twelve key areas ("The Gallup 12"), four of which are:
My supervisor, or someone at work, seems to care about me as a person.
There is someone at work who encourages my development.
In the last six months, I have talked with someone about my progress.
At work, I have had opportunities to learn and grow.
In this session, we will discuss three key elements of a dynamic mentorship program and how attendees can immediately move the needle on developing mentors and mentees in their organizations.
