HR Thursdays: Religious Accommodation Solutions for Businesses of All Sizes

Deb Whitworth and Rebecca Webber will address – and provide practical approaches to – issues ranging from requests to pray at work, fasting, proselytizing, requests not to work on certain shifts or perform certain types of work, preparations for prayer such as cleansing to requests for time off for certain events, religious garb, hairstyles, or other forms of dress, and more.
Deb Whitworth, SPHR, SHRM-SCP is Owner and CEO of HR Studio Group, LLC. Throughout her 30 years of human resources management and leadership experience, Deb has helped a variety of nonprofit and for-profit services and industries build and maintain compliant cultures of excellence. Deb was appointed by the Governor of Maine as Commissioner with the Maine Human Rights Commission in 2011 to complete an unexpired term and reappointed to fill a full five-year term in 2012. Named the Maine HR Leader of the Year in 2012, Deb is a frequent presenter on human resources and compliance topics at conferences and business functions. She is also an instructor in the HR Certificate Program at University of Southern Maine; Adjunct Faculty at Thomas College; and a guest lecturer at University of New England.
Rebecca S. Webber is a 1980 graduate of Williams College, cum laude, and a 1989 Boston College Law School, magna cum laude. Her areas of practice include employment law, employment litigation, civil litigation, and employment counseling, compliance, and training. She has been a speaker at a number of seminars and business gatherings on the topic of employment law, including for the Maine Human Rights Commission. Webber was awarded an AV rating by Martindale-Hubbell. The preeminent Martindale-Hubbell® AV-rating is determined by extensive peer review by members of the Bar and Judiciary. She is President of the Central Maine Human Resources Association, a local branch of SHRM (Society of Human Resource Management. Her approach to employment law issues is to reduce risk to the client while taking into account the bottom line. In the land of human resources, that means not just keeping fees low but taking into account the cost of turnover, morale, onboarding, and training.
HR Thursdays are presented in partnership with the LA Metro Chamber, Central Maine Human Resource Association and the Lewiston CareerCenter and offer employers resources and tools to help gain a competitive edge. Presenters will share best practices to businesses owners, HR staff and hiring managers in order to create meaningful recruitment, training, and retention strategies. HR Thursdays allow participants, whether employers of one employee or 1500, gain information needed to survive the labor shortage while giving tangible, and usable, tools and resources.
