Hiring and Retaining Veterans
Our presenters will deliver a broad-based overview of military character, culture, qualities to aid hiring professionals when their applicant selection process includes the potential for hiring Veterans. The presentation dispels myths regarding Veterans in the civilian workforce, emphasizes the reason to hire Veterans while providing some useful hints on recruitment, interviewing, and retention of Veterans. Military skills translation and decoding military discharge documents will also be discussed in this interactive presentation.
Leo Deon - Department of Labor
Local Veterans Employment Representative, has extensive experience and acumen supporting workforce development, business engagement, and Veteran advocacy for employment. As the Local Veterans Employment Representative serving the Central Maine area, he promotes Veteran hiring, services, and advocacy as well as business engagement with employers over a diverse three-county area. His passion in this arena extends far beyond his professional responsibilities. Seeing the need for Veteran resources in rural areas, he led the charge to establish a Maine Military & Community Network Regional Group in Franklin County, Maine in 2018 and serves as the Regional Group Chair. Prior to his entering the world of Veteran services, Leo served our nation with the U.S. Coast Guard, retiring as a Chief Warrant Officer. During his career with the Coast Guard, in addition to his normally assigned duties, he provided inspirational leadership by mentoring service members with professional and career development, military skills translation as well as transition coaching.
She is the Talent Acquisition Specialist for Northern Light Health. As part of her position, she works with all Northern Light Health member organizations from Portland to Presque Isle to develop new frontiers for member organization to create career paths for current employees and develop programs through university relations for future employees.
She is a member of the Northern Workforce Development Board in the Healthcare Partnership Sector and Chair of the Youth Advisory Committee, the Medical Assistant Board at KVCC, Maine Career Connect, the Kennebec Valley Human Resources Association (KVHRA), the National Association of Workforce Development Professionals (NAWDP), National Career Development Association (NCDA), State Workforce Board-Veteran Employment Committee, Young Workers Committee and the Hire-A-Vet Committee. Robin is passionate about working with students to help develop their career paths and look at all the options and opportunities. Another one of Robin’s passions is working with Veterans and oversees the Hire-A-Vet campaign for NLH.

HR Thursdays are presented in partnership with the LA Metro Chamber, Central Maine Human Resource Association, and Central Maine Community College and offer employers resources and tools to help gain a competitive edge. Presenters will share best practices to business owners, HR staff and hiring managers in order to create meaningful recruitment, training, and retention strategies.
