HR Thursdays: Discover Employee Handbooks
Maybe your organization already has an employee handbook, but you haven?t updated it since the 1990s. Maybe your organization is new or growing and you are thinking about whether you should adopt an employee handbook for the first time. Maybe you just want to make sure your handbook is up-to-date with all the recent changes in Maine. Whatever the reason, at this seminar you will learn all about the Maine laws and regulations that affect what should go into your organization?s employee handbook, best practices for adopting and updating employee handbooks and pitfalls that you should be aware of.

HR Thursdays are presented in partnership with the LA Metro Chamber, Central Maine Human Resource Association and the Lewiston CareerCenter and offer employers resources and tools to help gain a competitive edge. Presenters will share best practices to businesses owners, HR staff and hiring managers in order to create meaningful recruitment, training, and retention strategies. HR Thursdays allow participants, whether employers of one employee or 1500, gain information needed to survive the labor shortage while giving tangible, and usable, tools and resources.
Amy Dieterich is a shareholder with the firm of Skelton Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine, representing clients in Employment and Labor Law among other areas. Amy represents individual clients and businesses in commercial disputes, family matters, employment and labor law issues, as well as litigation, arbitration, and regulatory proceedings. Amy is admitted to practice in both Federal and state courts in Maine and New York. Amy was selected for inclusion in 2017, 2018, and 2019 New England Rising Stars © in the category of Business Litigation.
Prior to joining Skelton Taintor & Abbott, Amy was associated with two prominent New York law firms where she gained valuable litigation experience in a wide variety of matters including securities, white collar crime, False Claims Act, ERISA, fraud, contract, and complex commercial disputes.
Amy received her B.A. in Economics, cum laude, from Bryn Mawr College and her J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. While in law school, she received honors as a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar for Academic Excellence and was a Managing Editor of the school?s Human Rights Law Review.
Amy is an appointed member to the Auburn Board of Assessment Review. Amy sits on the board of trustees for Acadia Academy, a public charter school in Lewiston/Auburn for grades pre-K-6. She also is an assistant coach of the Lewiston High School mock trial team. In her spare time, Amy enjoys hiking and canoeing with her family in Maine?s parks and on its rivers.
Jordan Payne Hay is an attorney with the firm of Skelton Taintor & Abbott in Auburn, Maine, concentrating her practice in Employment Law, Human Resources Support, and other areas of law.
Jordan represents individual clients and businesses in commercial disputes, employment and labor law issues, as well as litigation, arbitration and regulatory proceedings. She has handled claims in both state and federal court, and before the Maine Human Rights Commission, the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and other state and federal agencies and tribunals. Jordan was selected for inclusion in 2019 New England Rising Stars© in the category of Employment and Labor Law.
Jordan is licensed to practice in both Maine and Massachusetts state courts, the United States District Court of the District of Maine, and the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. Jordan is a member of the Maine and Massachusetts State Bar Associations. She participated in the Maine State Bar Association?s highly-selective Leadership Academy for attorneys in 2019.
Jordan has a strong commitment to public service and received Katahdin Counsel Recognition in 2016, 2017 and 2018 for her pro bono efforts assisting individuals through the Maine Volunteer Lawyer?s Project.
Prior to joining Skelton Taintor & Abbott, Jordan worked as a legal intern for the United States Attorney?s Office, Civil Division, in Portland, Maine and as Judicial Intern for the Honorable Norman H. Stahl of the United States Court of Appeals for the First Circuit. She has also worked as a McKeen Fellow for the Maine Volunteer Lawyer?s Project.
Originally from Kansas City, Jordan received her B.A. in Government and Sociology from Bowdoin College, Dean?s List, and her J.D. from Northeastern University School of Law. While in law school, Jordan was the Managing Editor of the Northeastern Law Review. Also, while in law school, Jordan was a Lawyering Fellow with the Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition in Boston. Jordan?s academic research in law school on surrogacy laws in the United States and pregnancy discrimination in the workplace received two awards and have been published in the National Law Review.
In her free time, Jordan is a performer at the Community Little Theatre in Auburn. She is also an attorney co-coach for the Bowdoin Mock Trial team. She enjoys participating in Maine?s Tri-For-A-Cure and spending time with her spouse and Bernese Mountain Dog, K.C.
